The Material Boy #380

Balmain Slashed Army T-shirt

There are times when I go bonkers over fashion and pay 'an idiots' price for an item despite knowing I am over charged, but all done in the name of fashion.

But there are times when I would feel immensely stupid to even want to fork out 10% of the price for something that's completely a retail 'ruse'!

This Balmain Slashed Army T-shirt is such an item. What on earth is so precious about the cotton or the 'moth eaten' design that warrants such a exorbitant price? I think you can easily buy a similar tee from some homeless folk in the slums and no one will probably notice the difference. Except, you at least did some 'charity' out of the purchase.

Having said that, die hard Balmain fans will do anything to get their hands on the authentic pieces, which I find it hard to accept in this case. No wrong or right in paying this amount. But will u? My answer is a definite NO. Luxury goods are aspirational and sometimes unattainable to all, but it becomes insulting to a consumer's intelligence when you charge over £700 (or SGD$1626) for something that seems to come out of the trash bin. Now that becomes annoying:(

(Update: For everyone's info, all sizes on Net-a-porter has sold out except size 38 (as I am typing this update). Balmainia is indeed 'crazy' unstoppable!)

Price:
£776.92. Where to buy: Net-a-porter

  4. Exactly... it kinda infuriates me, consumers can sometimes be fool hardy, but this is pushing pricing to the extreme, consumers being taken for a fool:-(

  5. 100 percent agree with you, i think buying this shirt would be utter stupidity, instead just buy plain Tshirt, let your dog rip it apart and i bet it would look same as this one

  6. I hope no one buys this, but I know someone always will. Marketing at Balmain is amazing. If you want something totally destroyed, you should consider the original Japanese brand of destruction: Julius. Decarnin has been ripping them off for years.

  11. haha. we have a love hate relationship with Balmain. I am willing to pay a certain price for some pieces, especially the jeans...but just not this. I can DIY easily with some cheap army surplus tees:-)

  15. Who on earth would buy this T?

Can Balmain merchandise gets any more expensive?!

What is so special about this T, that allow Balmain to fetch such an exorbitant, extortionate price?

Even if it is for £77.69 I would think it is too much to pay for!

  16. I know exactly what you mean. I do love Balmain and I think that the overall look is great, but most of their stuff is insanely over price. I have noticed that the men's clothes are way less expensive than the women's clothes. Luisaviaroma had in stock a t-shirt similar to the one above, but it was much less beaten. Nevertheless it was for about $250-$350 USD, much much less than the one above!
