Ad Campaigns And Catalogues #39

Balmain Fall Winter 2009 Menswear Ad Campaign

Balmain's menswear pieces for Fall Winter 2009 may look bland and lack imagination, but the ad campaign somewhat have an opposite effect on me and I find them unexpectedly enthralling. Predominantly shot in black and white, these imagery with an austere mood perfectly captures a brooding and dark edge to Christopher Decarnin's creations. Not to mention when worn by the ever charming Clément Chabernaud, the somewhat 'bland' ready to wear pieces comes alive and got a hefty notch up in lust factor:-) The photography and treatment of the pictures, as shot by Karim Sadli also further contributes to the appeal of the campaign. Good photography is crucial...and of course a bit of french flair of style helps too:-P

I love the biker jeans...the bomber jacket and that TDF tuxedo blazer. Balmain = ridiculous pricing, but perhaps it is this 'unattainability' (and exclusivity...since not a lot of people can afford them. You heart but you ache for it...) that makes the brand achieved cult status with fashion fans worldwide.

  1. The Perfecto style leather jacket is amazing and is very similar to the women's style. All of this season is reminiscent of early Ghesquiere at Balenciaga for me. Even the cult status.

  4. I never actually heard of Balmain until Decarnin did his bejeweled rocker chic for Spring 09. The bold shoulders were great, and I was hoping that this edginess would rub off to the men's collection. But it doesn't always happen. Nevertheless, the men's collection is catching up to the women's hype status.

  5. I agree, Sean...pity now Balenciaga is now not very wearable for guys. It used to be:-P Perhaps Balmain will take its place...it's highly wearable, but too overpriced. Maybe we love overpriced clothing since it make sit more exclusive:-P Human nature...bad...

and Allan, I would love to drop by soon...spend a few days people watching..and perhaps get one 'souvenir' home if I am lucky? hahaha.

And Lorenzo, yes, the leather jacket is beautiful in the ad campaign. Balmain needs to hire more good looking models for their lookbooks.

Nico, it is tapping on the popularity of the woman's range (caused the editors of certain female magazines) that got everyone crazy about 'tacky' 80's:-P Now we adore the 'trashy+OTT' styles then.

  7. oh yeah, pet shop boys...Balmain is all about 80s...wonder how long this fascination with the 80s will last:-) and when it's over, has Balmain got other tricks up their sleeves? if not, then Balmain will be a one look wonder:-P which will be very sad.

  8. @ Allan

The model, Clément Chabernaud, is French. Not Danish.
