Balmain Fall Winter 2010 Womenswear
Some designers challenge themselves consistently, experimenting with new ideas to push them to new heights, while others slowly evolved their style, moving forward one step at a time. Balmain's Christophe Decarnin seems to be contented with doing the latter, showcasing yet another collection derivative from his past work.
Off goes the tough luxe amazons of Spring Summer 2010, in comes the glamour aristocrats of Fall Winter 2010. It's rock and roll Baroque style with lots of regal colours and details that seems at ease both in a Versailles courtroom or the dance floors of Bungalow 8. It's an amalgamation of all things GOLD and glittery... Gold party frocks, gold evening dresses, gold leather jackets, Gold lined brocades, right down to the shimmery pinstripes on the most gorgeous gold-buttoned pants suit.
You do not need any deciphering of the designer's intent here, unlike Balenciaga, which goes remarkably deeper in thought. Balmain is just sexy embodied, high glam personified clothing that you understand and want at a glance.
Repetitive? Non-innovative? Well, sales have increase almost 50% for the fashion house, so you can't blame Balmain for sticking to their tested and proven success forumla. Afterall, fashion is still business, so going for '$gold$' is exactly what this collection has achieved.

Love this golden super clothes, the last dress ¿isn't it gorgeous?....but the most precious piece is the purple flower print jacket, it looks so good.

Not as original as earlier collections. I miss the rougher side of Decarnin. This feels too Versace 80s and Gucci 90s to me. Not nearly as coveted as before.
Decarnin is repeating the same song again... so it does not look as fresh as before. Some of the dresses look like they are spillovers from last season. But I do adore some pieces,such as the brocade and shiny pinstripe blazers!
Kevin, I love your blog - but I think you knew that! Balmain is my newest obsession - innovative they are without changing every shape they've been successful with. The shoulders are beautiful, although arguably 90s, they are done is a very cool, hip way. The gold belted gown made me stop and say "daaaaaaaaamn!" - gorgeous! They're details are insane and I hope they keep it up!
I like this collection, and agree with u. Some pieces reminds me the last "Xena, the warrior" collection. But the shoulder change a little, and i'm happy to see simple jacket from Decarnin.
Love the pinstripe suit. Now we just wait and see Zara's interpretation...
It's a lovely collection:-) Just not the revolutionary direction that everyone is expecting Balmain to take. But this is what makes Balmain hot. In a way, perhaps Decarnin can evolved certain pieces a bit more so it is more fresh. We do expect a lot from this brand since it is now one of the labels to watch out for during fashion week. The price tag is a shocker alone. So we want more innovation. Perhaps Balmain innovates with the details and workmanship rather than cutting age ideas.
Indeed sean... Zara will make them at a fraction of the costs. Hopefully good enough cuts for men to wear too. I dun mind:-) hehe
