Ad Campaigns And Catalogues #44

Balenciaga Spring Summer 2010 Menswear

Here's a preview of Balenciaga Menswear Collection for Spring Summer 2010. I wonder what can be said of these 'weird' pieces that seem to fit only 'adolescent' and 'wafer thin' models. But seriously, how many twinks and kids can afford the price tag of Balenciaga? As for grown-up men who can afford them...I highly doubt these will run into their favourites list nor will they even be able to slip into these extra small pieces in the first place. Men wearing skirts (or super low crotch pants here) are a good statement piece editorially, but it's been done many times and not exactly fresh anymore. In real life, most men will not be caught dead in them. So I wonder how these fare in the buyer's list. Perhaps since Comme Des Garcons skirts for men flew off the shelves, there may be hope that Balenciaga's version will share the same luck.

I honestly do not feel excited at all for the collection. They may look strong for fashion spreads but does not translate well on real people. The look is limiting and only a handful can pull that off well. Nonetheless,, the metallic copper sandals stood out from the collection despite resembling what Raf Simons did for Spring Summer 2009.

What do you guys think? Yay or nay? I missed Balenciaga menswear from Spring Summer 2008's collection and before. After that...the designs just do not resonate with me anymore.

the ads look very much like Jil Sander.

I like the longish coat, the two-button blazer and the copper sandals. I am skinny and it's so hard to find a skinny outerwear.

I'm one of those slender boys who'd rather starve to buy balenciaga. I think your analysis is profound and dead on! But at least we still got some designers thinking about real fashion, not just sellability...:)

Balenciaga jackets are still the best so far. I agree with you about the pants though.

It is all interesting. I haven't seriously considered buying Balenciaga RTW in ages. Something is always off.

Those are all nice items, except maybe for those skirts. What´s bothering me though is the way they chose to present those items. It´s kind of the same like with Gucci. Those looks are very unappealing to me and I need to spend a long time looking if I want to like them; and that´s definitely not how it´s s´posed to be. Those pictures should make you wanna go out of your way to get those clothes. Well, they fail.

I like the structure of the clothes, but walking in them around the streets is like walking in a costume. But hey, if anyone can pull off the look then kudos to them. Wearability hasn't been Balenciaga's forte lately. In an artistic POV it's a gold mine. Not so much in real life.
