Proenza Schouler PS1 Backpack

New year new start. Looking for a new bag to begin afresh for 2015? Here’s my first pick for the new year.

If you have been a Proenza Schouler PS1 bag fan, good news. The iconic PS1 bag now gets a new backpack cousin. Yes, just in time for the backpack craze that gets every brand hopping on the queue to offer their own spin. Not all are successful, but in my opinion, this Proenza Schouler PS1 Backpack gets a thumbs up. Inheriting the iconic styling (from hardware, to flap closure to front pockets), the PS1 backpack is instantly recognisable without blatant branding. That is a plus! No true fashionista need be a walking signboard for any brand. The hardware for PS1, especially the metal buckle has been one of my favourite designs. It is distinctive and yet carries a bit of that industrial street edge, done polished or brushed finishing. So the bag is perfect to glam up or dress down. It is a versatile ‘everyday’ bag design.

The PS1 backpack comes in 2 sizes. The regular version measures 11.5” (29.21cm) length, 15” (38.1cm) height and 7” (17.78cm) depth, with a handy top handle should you need some hand grip. The PS1 XL Backpack is slightly wider but shorter and will be ideal for bigger build guys. Measures  16” (40.64cm) length, 13.5” (34.29cm) height, 7” (17.78cm) depth.

Look out for full leather and suede versions (€1,535) or beautiful jacquard patterned (€1,460 - €1,825) variants. The XL backpack comes in a lightweight nylon and leather combination which is (€1,250). Love these!

Gender Bender #64

Below: It may be named as a Lunch Bag... But this Proenza Schouler PS1 Lunch Bag definitely pack more style than just your afternoon meal. Love this triangle print version (US$1075) which features a photographic printed interior of bicycle details... Very cool! Works as a great clutch bag, even by men standards:-)

  

Proenza Schouler PS1 Lunch Bag

I am not agreeing this glamourised version of a lunch bag should resign to just a fate of holding just your sandwich and salads. Somehow I feel the name does not do the bag enough justice. This Proenza Schouler PS1 Lunch bag is definitely packing more style than just your lunch. I would feel it works fabulously as a clutch for the ladies and even the guys.

Crafted from sumptuous leather, this PS1 Lunch Bag comes in 2 sizes. Measuring 11.75”(w) x 9”(h) x 3”(d), the large size is ideal to hold just enough and yet not become too cumbersome. The expandable sides similar to that of a lunch bag (perhaps hence the inspiration for the name and design) ensures substantial room to pack even those chunky bits. U can also choose from a triangle print pattern or a plain coloured leather version (with gorgeous contrast coloured edge). I love them both. The latter evoking a minimalist aesthetic that gives Céline a run for their money while the Triangle print version has a surprise photographic print of bicycle details that adds a whole lot of cool. To complete the design, the signature PS1 metal clasp creates a highly recognisable detail despite the very discreet branding.

Proenza Schouler Large PS1 Bag For guys... What do you think?

I have always felt the PS1 Extra Large bag is the only size that will work for the boys. However, some of the more interesting bi-material designs only come in large sizes. That's frustrating. I have always love these more outstanding pieces with unique jacquard fabric, such as Fall Winter 2011's Navajo Jacquard version now available at Net-a-porter (£1,373.16 w/o UK VAT).

But check out this pic of Marie Claire's new Accessories Director, Kyle Anderson modeling the large version of this design. What do you guys think? Does the large size fit a guy? In my opinion, I love it on Kyle, love the rugged spin of boots and khaki hued pants with the colourful jacquard fabric of the bag:-)

Street Peeping: Bags On The Streets

Yet another edition of a summary of bags springing up around the world's most fashionable cities. For this edition, I pleased to find new designs besides the usual classics of Céline Luggage Tote, PS1 Bags and Balenciaga Arena Bags.

New comers such as 3.1 Phillip Lim's KC Leather Satchel are on my 'to-watched' list. A new larger version is due for Fall Winter 2011... and I am already putting it onto my 'must-buy' list. Prada's Saffiano Leather Executive Totes, deemed the 'Prada-kin (Prada's lesser next of kin to the Birkin)' is also spotted on the arms of fashion fans more and more. I have seen many women toting this style even in Singapore. Balenciaga's Lune Bag is a new surprise for me, as I am so used to the Arena Studs Motorcycle family of bags, that this understated gem is often left to the back of your mind. The Lune Bag is gorgeous in propotion and has a certain Céline luggage tote flair (but debuted way earlier than the luggage tote). And finally, a pic of a guy with a Proenza Schouler PS1 Bag in extra large format. Now I am very tempted to get a PS1!

Talk about furry tails... look how fabulous a fox tail bag accessory looks on the navy PS1 bag... I need a fox tail, I need a fox tail, I need a Proenza Schouler PS1, I need a Proenza Schouler PS1...

Besides Céline who will be offering fox tail bag charms, Isabel Marant with her fur craze Navajo collection has her own version as well. Looking fab and this gives us more options! But I am sticking with Céline's (Priced at an attainable SGD420):-P Need those fox tails! (And I will not be stoned by PETA for wanting these... since they are faux rather than the real thing:-P)

Bag Fever: Céline And Proenza Schouler

Céline and Proenza Schouler have both hit a jackpot with iconic bags that is both endearing and epitomises urban chic. The Luggage Envelope Tote (starts from SGD 2590) and Extra large PS1 Bag (SGD 3750) is a must have for the fashion forward ladies!

I just cannot get enough of pics of real people adopting these gorgeous arm candies with their amazing styles. It seemed the bags just looked fabulous on anyone! Coincidentally, both ladies are wearing leopard print shoes...

Proenza Schouler Resort 2011 Accessories

Winter is not even over and images of Resort/Cruise 2011 season images are already surfacing. Fashion is indeed fast and furious, unrelenting on consumer's wallets.

Here's a peek at the temptations, Proenza Schouler will direct at you come next Resort season. I have been a fan of PS1 bags. And now I am even more of a fan after seeing this new collection. Striking colour tones are evident in the collection with (almost) neon greens, and bright yellows being the statement hues. I love the PS1 Weekender in yellow croc or the bi-material version in canvas and leather. Even the now classic PS1 bag has a version crafted in canvas, leather and suede with a tri-colour combination, which I previously blogged about here and loved!

There seems to be a new PS11 messenger style satchel joining the ever expanding PS1 family. The smaller size and longer shoulder strap makes this a cute and happy everyday companion. And how could you resist them when they also come in bright green leather or croc versions. Love:-P

Beyond the PS1, there are also new members to the PS11 family that comprises a simple and elegant tote and clutch which spots huge square studs and the signature multi slot buckle. In a way, when I first saw these, Hermès immediately came to mind, especially the simply textured leather green clutch. Call it 'inspired' Proenza Schouler!

Beyond the bags, those 'woven' open toe flats and belts are looking very promising too.. don't you wish cruise season was here already?

Mulberry Elkington Briefcase

The ladies have invaded our male bags territory with the recent influx of briefcase inspired satchels. Leading the way, of course is Proenza Schouler's PS1 bag and Mulberry's Alexa Bag.

But if both of these ladies bags still finds you (the guy) feeling queasy carrying female styles, then perhaps Mulberry's Elkington Briefcase is a perfect alternative! Measuring 27.5cm(h) x 37.5cm(w) x 7.5cm(d), it is compact enough for daily use but roomy enough for documents, or even small laptops. I love the schoolboy design but done in a more classic way for the guys. What's more, at a price tag of £525, this is easier on your wallet than any of the 2 women's designs.

I am smitten by the PS1 bag. But the extra large size is hard to track down outside of USA and costs an arm and leg (US$2350!).... so perhaps this Mulberry Elkington can just stand in as my 'male PS1 bag':-P

Proenza Schouler Fall Winter 2010 Womens Accessories And Bags

From the dynamic duo who brought us the 'anti-IT bag', PS1 (which ironically became the hit bag that inspired many other similar schoolboy bag styles), came another highly modern and ultra savvy Fall Winter 2010 collection. Those mean looking PS11 bags, sister to PS1, get toughen up with square studs and more hardcore 'bling' hardware. Love the quilted version which seem like a 'grungier' sister to Chanel while the fur trim top flap style is street luxe with an edge!

There are also chain strap top handle handbags, with the one in croc invoking immense lust! Girls, sharpen your nails and be ready for some catfights at the stores if you want one of them!

As for shoe fanatics, those mean and tall ankle boots with side buckles are fabulous to spice up some biker cool. The heel design reminded me of Alexander Mcqueen's infamous armadillo heels (Some top models were worried about the height and fit of those alien looking heels and hence turned down walking at his SS2010 show.). The height of these Proenza Schouler shoes do look intimidating as well!

Proenza Schouler is definitely a fashion force to keep your radar on. Fans in Singapore will get to shop their fill of Proenza Schouler when Club 21 stores add the brand to their ever expanding selection of labels. Hurray!

(BTW, check out the interview Net-A-Porter did with Lazaro Hernandez and Jack McCollough on their inspiration behind the PS1 bag. At middle part of the clip, you see one of the guys showcasing the Extra Large PS1 bag. Observe the proportion of the extra large PS1 to a guy's build. Oh my... at that size, the bag is a match made in heaven for a man! I would grab that. It's gorgeous in tan coloured leather. LOVE...)

Proenza Schouler PS1 Weekender Anyone?

Attention all Proenza Schouler fans, we have seen the trendsetting PS1 bag, the chic PS1 pochette...are you ready for the PS1 Weekender? Yes, it is coming. Now you cannot complain you do not have an 'envy inducing' arm companion when you go on your next vacation...

The new weekender model comes in two sizes, medium and large. Prices range from US$1,150 for the medium and US$1,350 for the large size. PS1 Weekender should debut in December 2010.

(Boys, this could be the one that fits at all the right places with a bigger size and format!)
