Montblanc Urban Spirit Collection

The year is coming to a close with just 2 months to 2017. So no better time for Montblanc to launch a new collection of leather goods in time for you to reward yourself after a whole year of hardwork. New year = new bags!

The Montblanc Urban Spirit Collection will appeal to guys who wants modern designs combined with optimal comfort and smart storage solution, the modern gentlemen on the go. Each of the 22 piece in the collection is thoughtfully crafted to accompany this driven man, seamlessly from his workplace to the gym, from daily commute to his globe-trotting business endeavours or adventures.

Mirroring the multi-faceted lifestyle of this guy, many pieces in the collection have multiple functions to adapt to the demands of its owner as he transitions from one endeavour to the next. With its retractable handles, the Slim Document Case can serve as either a document case or as a portfolio, while the Tote Bag with its cufflink closure on the sides that allows the shape of the bag to be transformed from a daily workbag to a small duffle.  The Backpack (one of my favourites) is thoughtfully equipped with a side compartment for the storage of a laptop, a dedicated pocket for a phone with see-through holes for headphones, a satellite system, as well as a storm cap to protect the bag from the elements and reflective bands for added safety by night. Furthermore, with a simple and quick adjustment, the backpack can be transformed into a document case.

Also noteworthy, the line features the Montblanc Shield, a special lining added in the internal pockets  that provides protection against unauthorised reading, copying and tampering of personal data contained in the chips embedded in credit cards and passports. So you can travel with peace of mind with these bags and leather accessories.

Made of soft-to-the-touch black Italian leather with a slight waxy matte effect, the high performance collection is the result of the highest level of craftsmanship nurtured at the Montblanc Pelletteria in Florence. The collection is also characterised by chiselled edges with a metal strip detail, reinforcing the urban appeal of the designs.

Understated and highly functional, the Montblanc Urban Spirit collection definitely has many reasons to love. I love the compact messenger bag and backpack. These will make perfect companions for work and play while looking sharp and updated.

Montblanc 1858 Collection

Below: I absolutely love the new Montblanc 1858 collection which is inspired by the heritage of Minerva as one of Switzerland's most revered timekeeping specialists. With this collection, Montblanc revives the spirit of the legendary watches Minerva has been creating since 1858 - and gives them a new, contemporary vintage expression. Adore the period looking winding crown and the old Montblanc logo used during that era!

Montblanc 1858 Collection

I have always loved designs of vintage watches. Details and styling from yesteryear adds a deeper character and makes the watches more endearing. Like an heirloom piece that you had owned for many generations, something to treasure and tell a story.

To my delight, Montblanc have released a new collection of watches, The Montblanc 1858 Collection that takes inspirations from the heritage of Minerva, a watchmaking manufacture founded in Villeret in the Saint-Imier valley in 1858  — the eponymous year of the collection. Minerva was renowned throughout the late 19th and early 20th centuries for its incredible precision watchmaking. Since 2006, Montblanc have taken over the facility and now as a tribute, the 1858 collection is born.

I adore the designs of the collection, with details that encompasses history, successfully blending vintage inspiration and modern-day appeal.

I am particularly loving the period looking winding crown (Supposedly, they are, ergonomically designed so pilots during that time could wind them up in-flight while wearing gloves), watch dials that bear the historic logo of Montblanc used during 1858 and a large 44mm diameter case that references the actual chronographs manufactured during that era. Super-LumiNova®* coated Arabic numerals and indexes on the dial stays luminescent for a long time, making these timepieces perfect for function during night or day.

When worn, these vintage character timepieces look charming while packing relevant modern features that makes them efficient time keepers.

The Montblanc 1858 Collection features 4 unique designs:

1) 1858 Chronograph Tachymeter’ Limited Edition (only limited to 100 pieces) is a true collector’s dream with a 44 mm pink-gold case and an impressive caliber MB M16.29 manually-wound movement.

2) 1858 Small Second Limited Edition with Alligator Strap (limited to 858 Pieces) is well priced at USD3,255 and yet collectible due to a limited number of releases.

3) 1858 Small Second with Bracelet, priced at USD3360 is for those with prefer a more extravagant option most suited as an evening companion.

4) Lastly the more casual and easy to wear, 1858 Small Second with tan coloured calfskin strap, highly attainable at USD3045 (SGD4600) is a great addition on your wrist for injecting some historical flair to your style. (See 1st pic above)

Montblanc Backpacks: Designed For The Modern Trailblazer

Below: If you are looking for a contemporary backpack with functional design, Montblanc has just the right choice for you. I love the Montblanc Meisterstück Soft Grain backpack which is refined and sleek, befitting the boardroom as much as the streets. Filippo from the Three F demonstrates how great the backpack looks with refined gentlemen style!
Montblanc Backpacks: Designed For The Modern Trailblazer

Season after season backpacks have continued to maintain their status as a wardrobe staple favoured by guys all over. Transformed beyond being a practical handsfree accessory for the guy, luxury brands have injected a sense of contemporary style that now elevates it to a fashion statement.

Givenchy, Saint Laurent, Louis Vuitton, Balenciaga and many more brands offered high fashion versions of backpacks. Swiss luxury brand, Montblanc is no exception.

However, rather than focusing on fleeting trends, Montbanc’s backpacks are designed with timeless modernity but most importantly, with functionality in mind. These contemporary companions are crafted to withstand rigours of a fast paced urban jungle. Keeping in mind technological devices becomes closely integrated to our lifestyles, Montblanc backpacks all feature padded compartments to safely carry our indispensable laptop. In addition, zipped pockets also provide special places to store smaller items including smartphones and wallets. Now that is what I call a truly consumer centric design.

From sophisticated to casual, there is a style for everyone.

Here’s the 3 outstanding backpacks from Montblanc that is noteworthy:

1) Montblanc Meisterstück Soft Grain Backpack

This one I own, so I can confidently attest to the appeal of its formal style, and utilitarian design. I call this an executive backpack. The Meisterstück Soft Grain backpack bag plays in the league of professional executives rather than the interns. Definitely worthy of the boardroom matched with impeccable suits and well polished brogues. The many useful internal compartments, including one for the laptop and easy access front and back zipped pockets for small belongings are extremely welcoming. Did I also mention the soft grained leather is a pleasure to behold?:-P (Dimensions: 40 x 31 x 18 cm - Price: Euro 665)

2) Montblanc Extreme Rucksack

This one braves the weather and survives the demands of man’s daily urban adventures. Tough wearing due to the innovative high-performance leather with a unique patented dressing and finishing
technique, the Montblanc Extreme Backpack delivers durability surpassing conventional leather and nylon materials. So expect a long life expectancy when you invest in one of these. The contemporary styling is another good reason to get one. Sleek details such as black aluminium fittings and the Montblanc emblem with ruthenium-plated ring contribute to a distinctively sleek Montblanc appearance. Comes in 2 sizes of small and large. (Dimensions: (small size) 28 x 40 x 16.5 cm - Price: Euro 695, (large size) 32 x 46 x 18 cm - Price: Euro 765)
3) Montblanc Signature Rucksack

The more casual brother of the 3 backpacks mentioned in this post. The Montblanc Signature Rucksack is crafted from unique PVC coated coating that resists water, abrasion and stains, while trimmed with printed calfskin for an added touch of refinement. The design features a distinctive “M” pattern inspired by the famous letter engraved on the nib of every Montblanc Meisterstück fountain pen. The jacquard lining and stainless steel fittings with a shiny finish embossed with the Maison’s name complete the modern explorer’s look. (Dimensions: 32 x 42.5 x 16.5 cm - Price: Euro 560)

With incredible options of backpacks offered in Montblanc’s bags collection, it’s no wonder backpacks are the best sellers for the brand now. Yes, this came as a surprise to me as well when it was unveiled at the recent ‘Florence Comes To You’ event. No wonder the brand is stepping up efforts to expand their leather accessories, steadily increasing their reputation as a true luxury lifestyle brand alongside their innovative watches and writing instruments.

Check out the backpacks in stores now at Mandarin Gallery and the newly minted boutique at Takashimaya!

Montblanc M Writing Instruments: Designed by Marc Newson

Below: Teaming up with Marc Newson, Montblanc launches their new Montblanc M writing instruments, emphasising on modernity and a functional design... Love the unique silhouette of the pens with a distinct plateau at the barrel end...

Montblanc M Writing Instruments: Designed by Marc Newson

Montblanc collaborates with design superstar Marc Newson for a new collection of writing instruments, Montblanc M, bringing together the maison’s long history with Newson’s trademark biomorphic style. The result is a Montblanc pen that balances form and function with a distinct sense of modernity.

So what can we expect from this collaboration? First thing to note is the unique silhouette on each of these Montblanc M pens. An innovative plateau at the barrel end breaks away from the shape of conventional pens. And when closed, ensures the clip on the pen cap aligns perfectly for a design that flows fluidly through. With the use of magnet, the cap closes precisely with ease while an additional snap mechanism ensures the cap remains firmly in place.

The body is crafted with black resin and milled with a diamond tool to create the plateau at the end. The iconic Montblanc emblem is put into place using ultrasonic welding for a perfectly flat and smooth surface. Rounding off the attention to design detail, a gold nib AU585 features a two-tone finish of rhodium and ruthenium for added appeal. During the launch year only, the nib is engraved with the letters “MN” as a tribute to the Australian designer who imagined this latest evolution in writing culture.

“Like Montblanc, I seek to strike a balance in the design between the simplicity of the functional qualities of this product and the creation of a sensory experience in its use,” explains Marc Newson. “From the sight of the shape’s clean lines or the detailed plating of the nib, from the touch and feel of the writing instrument with its polished surface and ruthenium forepart, to the sound of the click of the cap as it is drawn to the body of the writing instrument with the magnet, Montblanc M offers a seamless writing experience that engages the senses.”

Look for the Montblanc M at all Montblanc flagship stores as well as online beginning September 2015. It will be available as a fountain pen, rollerball pen, ballpoint pen, as well as a screenwriter for use on a touchscreen, and as a fine art and fineliner for technical drawing.

Montblanc Heritage Chronométrie Quantième Complet Vasco da Gama

Below: From Montblanc's new Heritage Chronométrie Collection comes my favourite design... The Heritage Chronométrie Quantième Complet Vasco da Gama which balances personality and functionality with full calendar and a moonphase display amidst clean and elegant styling...
Montblanc Heritage Chronométrie Quantième Complet Vasco da Gama

Montblanc has launched another new timepiece collection: The Heritage Chronométrie Collection. Paying tribute to the famed 15th century explorer, Vasco da Gama, who used stars and primitive nautical devices like the nocturlabium or “star clock” to navigate the seas. His quest lead to the discovery of a new trade route to India, fostering trade between Europe and Asia.

One of the enviable designs and my favourite is the Montblanc Heritage Chronométrie Quantième Complet Vasco da Gama. The Calibre MB 29.16 movement powers a full calendar and moonphase display with an aperture for a golden turning disc below featuring the moon in the night sky. The subtle sunburst patterned white dial also features rhodium-plated facetted indexes and numerals “3”, “9” and “12” on the dial for easy time telling. These details creates a clean and balanced watch face, packing function without crowding and complicating the design.

Below: A close up of the cool blued lacquered subdial depicting the sky with the Southern Cross in the Southern hemisphere with moonphase indication...

With a 40mm dial, the Heritage Chronométrie Quantième Complet Vasco da Gama looks just right on the wrists of any guy, neither too dainty small nor cumbersome to wear as a dress or day watch. I adore the elegant styling mixed with modern aesthetic of a blued lacquered subdial depicting the sky with the Southern Cross in the Southern hemisphere which brings a story behind the watch, distinguishing itself from other watch designs.

At 4,350 euros, Heritage Chronométrie Quantième Complet Vasco da Gama is well priced and deserving collectible for any watch fans!

Below: Introducing the new Montblanc StarWalker Urban Speed – a sleek and ultra-masculine writing instrument crafted for urban explorers looking to push beyond boundaries... Read on to find out the unique material innovations used in these amazing pens. A true modern luxury.

Montblanc Starwalker Urban Speed Writing Instruments

Montblanc writing instruments have always adopted a more classic and heritage look which cast an image of refinement and a dapper sharp attitude. With times changing and men dressing more avant garde than before, Montblanc has evolved their successful Starwalker Pen series and introduce the new Montblanc Starwalker Urban Speed series... a collection a designed with the fast-paced urban life in mind. Characterised by a bold red stripe against its precious resin pen cap and barrel that are enhanced by ultra black PVD plated fittings in a brushed surface. The result, a layer of texture that that brings out the rough and masculine appeal of StarWalker Urban Speed collection.

Due to its hardness, scratch, chemical and temperature resistance, PVD or “Physical  Vapor Deposition” plating is primarily used in the automotive and aerospace industry, but now finds a new purpose on a writing instrument designed for those always on-the‐go and ready to face all the adventures of life. Montblanc has once again prove that heritage and modern technological innovations can go hand in hand.

These high performance writing instruments comes in a brushed ruthenium-plated Au585 gold nib, in Fineliner and Ballpoint, or for tech fans, the e-Starwalker version of Urban Speed to complement the technology of the Samsung Galaxy Note 4.

Montblanc Heritage Chronométrie Dual Time

Below: Introducing the new Montblanc Heritage Chronométrie Dual Time launched recently during SIHH 2015... read on to find out what features this handsome timepiece packs! Hollywood actor Mark Ruffalo wore one during the recent 87th Academy Awards... speaks a lot about this latest addition to the Montblanc timepiece collection:-)
Montblanc Heritage Chronométrie Dual Time
as worn by actor Mark Ruffalo during the recent 87th Academy Awards

Today is the last day of Chinese New Year and the festive season (in Asia, at the very least, following Christmas and New Years in consecutive months) ends and a normal work year will commence.

What better way to get back in gear than to treat yourself to a new timepiece. This time, just launched during January at SIHH 2015... Montblanc delivers another noteworthy timepiece for horology fans and savvy gentlemen. Check out their latest Montblanc Heritage Chronométrie Dual Time.

This new addition to the Montblanc brand is equipped with a complication developed in-house by Montblanc, enabling it to display a second zone time (local time) simultaneously along with the time in the wearer’s home time zone. This feat is achieved with the aid of a second hour-hand that can be reset in hourly increments without affecting the position of the first hour-hand. The date display also corresponds to this local time hand. If the user does not need to display the second zone time, the second hour-hand can be set so that it completely covers its counterpart for the time in the home zone. The 24-hour display at “12 o’clock” shows the home time with a day and night indication.

I love the clean and uncluttered styling of the watch face. The bezel has a flat surface that’s alternately polished and satin-finished. The horns are rounded. Built from three parts, the bright silvery white dial is adorned with a sunburst pattern and bears eleven facetted applied indexes and a prominent numeral “12”. If slimness of a watch is one of your discerning requirements, then the 41-mm-diameter case in stainless steel is crafted at an elegantly slim 9.9 mm. How amazing to pack all these horological innovations within this slim depth.

The leather wristband is crafted at the Montblanc Pelletteria, the Maison’s own leather manufacture in Florence, Italy. The new and uncommonly flat double folding clasp secures the strap handsomely.

Wear it and you are all set for even the grandest of occassions... such as what Mark Ruffalo did when he wore one to the recent 87th Academy Awards. Befitting a talented Hollywood actor nominated for his role in the movie ‘Foxcatcher, so this timepiece is definitely one to own and cherish.

Below: Oscar® nominee for Best Actor in a Supporting Role, Mark Ruffalo in “Foxcatcher”, was wearing a Montblanc Heritage Chronométrie Dual Time and Montblanc cufflinks for his appearance at the 87th Academy Awards®...

With the emphasis on wearable technology forecasted for the future of fashion, Montblanc is once again one step ahead of its competitors with the introduction of their latest innovation, The Montblanc TimeWalker Urban Speed e-Strap.

Montblanc is the first luxury brand to combine wearable technology with fine watchmaking in the centuries old Swiss horological tradition. It is an integrated technology device that offers an activity tracker, smart notifications, remote controls and Find-Me functions. It connects, via Bluetooth Low Energy, to selected Android and Apple iOS smartphones. For the first time, an owner will be able to wear a mechanical timepiece with highly useful digital functionality. Here’s a rundown of what the e-strap’s technological features:

1. Smart notifications: Be notified by vibrations that acts as an alert of incoming communication without the need to look at the smartphone. It enables the preview of e-mails by topic and sender, read text messages, see incoming calls and status updates of social media feeds or reminders of important upcoming meetings, all on the wrist.

2. Activity Tracker: The activity tracker is a simple tool to monitor the wearer ́s physical activity over time and keep track of his personal daily goals. To do so, it measures the number of steps taken per day, calories burnt and the distance travelled. The accompanying smartphone application enables the tracking of personal progress per week and month. The e-Strap will remind the wearer to stay active through unobtrusive vibration alerts and show at a glance the daily progress.

3. Remote Controls: The remote controls are useful for controlling the smartphone with the e-Strap. The camera remote enables the taking of pictures with the smartphone by triggering the shutter with a tap on the e-Strap thus allowing better and easier selfies or group shots.

Montblanc Heritage Spirit Orbis Terrarum

Below: Designed with savvy world travellers in mind, Montblanc's latest offering to the world of timekeeping is this Montblanc Heritage Spirit Orbis Terrarum which has a innovative and exclusive complication to tell time across all 24 timezones...

Montblanc Heritage Spirit Orbis Terrarum
Innovative Worldtimer for the elegant traveller
In homage to the spirit of the legendary Montblanc Meisterstück Fountain Pen launched in 1924, Montblanc introduced a new watch collection to honour its 90th anniversary in 2014. From 2015 onwards this collection will assume its future position among the Montblanc watch families as the Heritage Spirit Collection.

Having the honour of being the first model to be categorised under this new Heritage Spirit Collection, the Montblanc Heritage Spirit Orbis Terrarum is designed with savvy world travellers in mind. This innovative timepiece interprets one of the most contemporary and useful complications - the world time function - in a new, innovative way. The earth is anchored at the core of this complication, that is named Orbis Terrarum, the Latin term for “globe”, “earth”, and “world”. This timepiece adopts a universal approach, telling the time in 24 timezones all over the world, thanks to a manufacture complication developed in-house by the Montblanc master watchmakers. At its centre, the main sapphire crystal dial displays the continents as viewed from the North Pole which are encircled by the names of the 24 cities representing the different timezones. Using a innovative multi-layer dial construction, the times of all 24 timezones can be indicated. A day/night disc shows at a glance where it is day or night on the planet. The rotation of this disc changes the colours of the continents as seen on the dial, alternately from light (day) to dark (night). This innovative functional principle is rare to find in fine watchmaking and is exclusively developed in-house by Montblanc.

Now anyone who owns this incredible timepiece will always keep on time no matter which corner of the planet they are in. Truly an elegant and unique watch that is a keeper.

Ultimate Christmas Wishlist: Montblanc “Homage to Nicolas Rieussec Special Edition”

Below: The ultimate Christmas pampering... Montblanc “Homage to Nicolas Rieussec Special Edition” is a dream watch to own this festive season and beyond. Check out the very special invisible numerals on the hour circle that only appears when in the dark!
Montblanc “Homage to Nicolas Rieussec Special Edition”
A New Interpretation of Rieussec’s Chronograph from 1821

Christmas is the season of celebration and joy. And what better way to usher in some joyous pampering than gifting yourself or a special someone with a brand new timepiece that combines innovation, luxury and timeless appeal this festive holiday. Let that piece of wrist embellishment be the talking point of any Christmas dinner with family or parties with friends.

Yes, watches are quintessential in speaking volumes of your arrival with taste and style.

For me, my dream Christmas indulgence this year comes from none other than the house of Montblanc. Time and again, their timepieces have exceeded my expectation and elevated my appreciation of a good time keeper. Taking my favourite Nicolas Rieussec design and reinterpreting it with even more features and innovations make Montblanc’s latest watch offering, Montblanc “Homage to Nicolas Rieussec Special Edition” a true watch connoisseurs’ dream come true.

Nicolas Rieussec’s first patented chronograph from 1821 bears an unmistakable appearance that combines an off-centre hour-circle in the upper part of the dial and the chronograph’s elapsed-time displays in the lower portion of the face. As a watchmaker to the French royal court, he invented this construction to precisely measure the running times of individual horses at a horserace.

We are all familiar with the current versions of Montblanc’s Nicolas Rieussec watches and this new interpretation now comes even more bells and whistles ready to impress you further.

The most distinct being the watch’s hour-circle bearing an exclusive Montblanc technology, the “Mysterious Superluminova” pigments which permeates the Arabic hour numerals that is a characteristic font of the Montblanc Rieussec collection. By doing so, the digits are invisible in daylight because they’re precisely embedded into the hour ring, with which they share exactly the same colour. But when the ambient light starts to dim, the luminous pigments that fill the numerals – as well as the Superluminova-filled hour-hand and minute-hand – begin to glow, thus assuring perfect legibility and simultaneously giving this watch its unique appearance. What’s not to love about clever innovations? Of course, do not forget the 18 karat rose gold case with anti-reflective sapphire crystal face, a self-winding mechanical manufacture Calibre MB R200 movement with double barrel that lasts an impressive 72 hours of continuous running... the list goes on and on.

Below: The transparent sapphire crystal of the caseback bears an engraving of the horse as well as the inscription “Paris, September 1821” highlighting the historical event on the month exactly 193 years ago from the launch on this special edition.

Limited to 30 pieces for rose gold and 100 pieces for stainless steel, I hope Santa Claus got my wishlist and deemed me worthy to receive such a luxurious gift. A guy’s gotta dream sometimes... who knows when dreams may come true:-P If all else fails, empty your bank accounts and head to Montblanc stores to secure your piece:-)

Montblanc Writers Edition: Daniel Defoe
A Tribute to the Father of the English Novel and Creator of Robinson Crusoe

This Fall 2014 Montblanc pays tribute to the author of one of world literature’s great epic novels and the father of realistic fiction, Daniel Defoe. Not able to recall who this great writer is? How about refreshing your memory with the famous adventure story published in 1719, titled Robinson Crusoe? Now I am sure everyone will have heard about the story, one that vividly captures the ordeals about a castaway who finds himself stranded on a tropical island to face cannibals and mutineers.

Every detail of the writing instrument recalls the story of this brave character lost at sea, as masterfully narrated by Defoe in his novel. The shape of the writing instrument is inspired by the wooden paddle that Crusoe relied on in vain to escape from the island on many occasions. Precious resin was used on the cap and barrel to achieve an effect that captures the complex texture and colour of wood, a material that symbolizes Crusoe’s life as a survivor on the remote island, reduced to the simplest of things. Enhancing the appearance of the resin’s polished surface, the cap ring and cone are adorned with fine engravings typical of the 18th century ornaments that decorated leather-bound book covers of the time, including the first-ever edition of the novel.

Attention to details is impeccable in these Montblanc Writers Edtion: Daniel Dafoe writing instruments, even right down to the elaborately decorated feather shape clip, reminiscent of Crusoe’s most loyal companion on the island, the parrot Pol. This collection of Fountain Pens, Rollerball and Ballpoint Pens truly immortalises the author’s unmistakable imprint on world literature into a collector’s piece that exemplifies his prolific writing talent.

I forsee this will make a fantastic gift for any literary fans, especially anyone who are avid readers of Daniel Dafoe’s work. The Montblanc Writers Edition: Daniel Defoe collection of writing instruments is available in Montblanc stores now. Just in time for Christmas season!
