Kris Van Assche Spring Summer 2011 Mens Bags, Shoes And Accessories

Kris Van Assche continues his focused and fuss free, almost 'sterile' (free from frivolous detailing) aesthetics in his Spring Summer 2011 Mens accessories collection. Footwear being the standout yet again in the collection, with new shapes and interesting designs. The ankle boots with frayed edging (on the elastic panels) and matched with thick wedge soles looked fresh and edgy, adding a worn out appeal to any look.

The trainers feature detailings such as wrap-around shoe laces, thin slits across the front and comes in varied materials of suede, washed canvas and brushed leather. Sandals are also eye catching pieces, with my favourite being the 'gladiator' lace-up ankle height sandals that creates a powerful visual statement. It's footwear befitting any urban warrior!

Bags, belts and wallets follow the minimal design direction but often contrasted with unusual materials such as thick raffia ropes, fabric ribbons or braided leathers. It's these unusual mix that gives Kris Van Assche accessories that differentiating appeal to his competitors.

Colours in tones of sandstone, beige, anthracite grey and black add to the sombre feel, evoking a sharp sense of modernity in each design.

My MANy Bags Trendspotting #122

Guys: It's Time For 'Booty' Call!

Oh no! Not that kind of 'call', what were you thinking?!?! This is a PG13 blog!

Yes, I am talking about the major influx of boots in all manners for guys this Fall Winter 2010 season. From riding boots, dressy boots, military boots, biker boots to hiking boots... you name it, you got it. My favourite are those gorgeous tall boots with shearling lining from Burberry Prorsum (retails for USD795) and Kris Van Assche's modern take on the military boot.

So what are you waiting for? 'Booty' calls!

My MANy Life's Inspirations #13

Kris Van Assche: 10 Rules of Style

Kris Van Assche assumed a difficult role when he was appointed the creative director of Dior Homme right after Hedi Slimane's departure. Hedi Slimane left a lasting legacy of redefined menswear proportions that has only recently seen it fading away. Kris's Dior Homme was wrought with many criticism and comments, some harsh, some good. Nonetheless, he has slowly injected his own design idealism into Dior Homme. Although I have not taken into his designs at Dior yet, I adore his work at his own label. Some of the best shoe designs come from this man. Here's an article from Details magazine which the very 'eye pleasing' designer shared his 10 rules of style. An insightful read:

Belgian born designer Kris Van Assche has become a more recognizable figure in the fashion world. Starting of as a designer for Yves Saint Laurent, he now runs his own label and is currently the artistic director for Dior Homme, which he has headed since 2007. Kris Van Assche was recently featured in Details magazine where he shared his top 10 rules of style giving us more insight into his fashion choices.

1.
A lot of fashion houses design for the catwalk and not the street—then you see the clothes on a regular guy and it’s a mess. Don’t disguise your personality behind labels; impose it on the clothes.

2.
The most embarrassing thing a man can own is a disposable razor. They’re for women. And speaking of grooming, there’s nothing less flattering than shaved legs.

3.
Wearing a pair of high-tops with a suit deconstructs the look, and that’s important. I like the way high-tops and pants act together. It’s like the effect of rolled-up sleeves for your trousers. Just make sure the socks match your sneakers, not the pants. If you like black high-tops, wear black socks. White, white.

4.
I don’t really think I know a man who wouldn’t look good in black. Black is always good. It’s the basic.

5.
You can wear a white shirt to work, to dinner, to visit the grandmother, to the opera, on vacation, at the beach. It’s the true get-away-with-anything item.

6.
There’s definitely an age limit for wearing leather pants, but not for wearing leather jackets. A standout fashion leather jacket can look great on a young guy. And there are a lot of suedes that men can get away with at any age.

7.
Don’t just copy an outfit. Look in the mirror and do a reality check. It’s all about making the good match. You’ll know when something is right. And if you don’t, just walk down the street: If people look away from you, then you know you’ve done something wrong.

8.
When I took over Dior Homme, I was warned. I knew it was going to be tough—but it was worse. In life you need good friends, and at work you need a good team. There’s so much drama in life and work that you can easily get lost. You need to keep a little distance from everything.

9.
We’ve had beefy guys and we’ve had—well, skinny isn’t really the right word, it’s more like scary. Now men should be athletic, healthy. Today it’s about having a balance in life—having nice clothes, good food, and respecting your body.

10.
My grandmother told me there are two ways of living: You can either survive or you can really make a life. There is eating and there is dining. She would always give that extra little effort, and I still believe that is important—to make things more beautiful makes all the difference.

Most memorable of his 10 rules is rule No. 2. I couldn't agree more. Men should trim and avoid shaving their legs. It is 'disturbing' to see a guy with silky smooth legs :-P

Below: Kris Van Assche's Fall Winter 2010 Mens Shoes are looking very promising, especially those directional heavy duty boots with leather buckled panels... A strong footwear design statement for next fall...

Below: The slouchy versions are just as appealing...

Below: Interesting trainers for next season... same application of leather panelling for a contemporary design...

Below: This version resembles a certain pair of Dior Homme Spring Summer 2010 trainers...

Below: Neutral and sleek designs for other accessories such as belts and scarves...

Kris Van Assche Spring Summer 2010 Mens Shoes And Accessories

Kris Van Assche did his Fall Winter 2010 Menswear Collection based in neutral tones of blacks and greys. In an almost monotonous, yet single minded design proposal, the flannel/wool outerwear, checked shirts and billowy pants are all matched with directional accessories, most notably in the form of some of the best footwear for next season. Heavy duty boots came in both structured or slouchy leather but cleverly decorated with multiple/wrap-around buckle straps or leather panelling for a masculine and contemporary design statement. I also adore the trainers which shares the same treatment, although there is one design with shoe lace detailing, closely resembling one Dior Homme Spring Summer 2010 trainers. Belts and scarves are a refreshing change from overly embellished counterparts and will remain a strong basic to accentuate any wardrobe.

Very commendable designs for Kris Van Assche on his own label. I prefer it more than what he has done for Dior Homme. I sense a pair of Kris Van Assche boots beckoning to me this next fall:)

My MANy Bags Lookbook #11

Time To Get Boyish...Baker Boy Style!

Classic boyish charm is the way to go for this edition for myMANybags lookbook. I was inspired by the cute Baker Boy Hats seen on multiple runways this fall season with Burberry Prorsum especially emphasizing on this particular head gear. Love the playful style and it's practicality, keeping your hair in place and head toasty during the cold winter months.

I am going for a classic style with some modern twist, all in the name of fun and play. Comme Des Garcon Homme Plus' trompe l'oeil Stripe Vest Shirt. The vest is sew on the front and gives the effect that you are wearing one while not. Simply quirky. Lanvin's mighty cool wool jersey blazer calls for a fluid and soft silhouette to give a sense of youthful nonchalance. Alexander Mcqueen's plaid trousers add texture and pattern to the whole ensemble (roll up the legs to ankle height please:-) while Lanvin's Blue Velvet Trainers finish it off with a sense of sporty luxurious chic. As for accent pieces, Dries Van Noten's casual Silk Tie Belt looks thrown on effortlessly and unplanned. Last of all, no men nor boys should ever leave the house without a bag. Hence, Bottega Veneta's classic and elegant Nero Toro Tote crafted in textured leather and intrecciato handles is a brilliant companion.

Who's in for boyish charm?!?!

Kris Van Assche Spring Summer 2010 Men's Accessories

Continuing his clean and minimal lines for his namesake label, Kris Van Assche stays thru to his design vision and offered a genuinely appealing accessories collection with lots of sports influence. For spring summer 2010, we see the on-trend 'sneaker sandals' in different variations, black, white, and some accented with splashes of bright yellow and electric blue. Definitely something to look forward to, giving the conventional men's footwear a few more interesting options. I do adore these quirky hybrid footwear, although they are not entirely fresh concept (bearing resemblance to my Pierre Hardy sandals). Despite that, the highcut version still look cool and will be perfect for active boys who wants well ventilated feet:-)

The more formal lace-ups are given a contemporary touch with coloured soles of yellow and blues. Something that is subtle and yet injects a new life to an otherwise normal design.

For the bags, we see styles of a slouchy shape, often without any visible hardware. I like the simple no frills design in leather or canvas which is a fresh breath from all the overly embellished versions in the market now.

Will definitely look forward to checking these out next year:-) Somehow, Kris Van Assche's namesake line reflects better of his design vision than what he did for Dior Homme.

The Material Boy #277

Below: Kris Van Assche's Spring Summer 2009 Rose Brooch...alternative to LV's?

Kris Van Assche Fall Winter 2009/2010 Mens Accessories

I always find Kris Van Assche not a good match to Dior Homme. Perhaps his predecessor, Hedi Slimane wowed the world with his slim and rock star look and left such a great impression that it is hard to not to compare. For Kris Van Assche's own label, he is more free to express his ideas with being under the shadows of anyone. I always like his take on asymmetrical shapes, unusual designs of footwear. For next fall winter 2009/2010, I am a fan of his 'wrap around' design for the footwear. It is different and yet unique. And the asymmetrical buckles for his belt is a signature and recurring style now. Love the braided version. Even the silver bracelet with just a twisted design creates a subtle yet appealing appeal. Kris Van Assche is a master of subtle surprises. Never too overbearing, just enough for those who appreciates details to admire.

On the side, Kris Van Assche does some flower brooches for men. Perhaps an alternative for Louis Vuitton's more opulent version?
