My MANy Life's Inspirations #15

Below: Brad Goreski... we have seen his impeccable taste in clothes. Now take a tour of his home and check out his interior decor tastes and amazing closet...:-P
A peek Into Brad Goreski's Home By The Coveteur

We all know who Mr 'mighty cute' Brad Goreski is. But have you wondered beyond all his cheeky personality and impeccable taste in style... what do you imagine his home would be like?

Well, wait no further... The Coveteur (one of my favourite blogs) just got an all access pass to Mr Brad's home with his boyfriend Gary in Hollywood Hills. Surprisingly, no Leopard skins and aplenty studs, pink feather boas nor 'Charlie and the chocolate factory' setup...

What's present in the amazing home, are masculine, retro chic furnishings... tastefully decorated, a wonderful pool and a closet that will induce the envy out of every guy. From Christian Louboutins to YSL to Black Fleece... all the dapper and fun brands are up for picks.

Read the captions on each pic as quoted by the man himself... they are so witty funny on some and can only be from Brad.

Brad Goreski is sunshine and inspiration. You cannot help but smile when you look at him.

Below: Which male star is your pick for best dressed for 2011? Mine's super hot Ryan Gosling!
(Clockwise from top: Ryan in Green Gucci suit at 'Ides of March' Premiere, Salvatore Ferragamo at Cannes for 'Drive' Photo call, Gucci SS2012 for 'Crazy Stupid Love' premiere, Leaving airport in a leather jacket and dropped pants...)
Who Is Your Best Dressed Guy Of 2011?

2011 will be over in less than 24 hours. Over the past year, we have seen many style savvy male stars dressed to impress at many levels, providing paparazzi worthy news and fashion inspirations for all. Not to mention selling a brand's image and making them desirable.

So who is the best dressed male star of 2011 in your opinion? For me, Ryan Gosling tops it all! This super hot, super sexy, super versatile actor not only looked good on screen, but in real life at events sweep everyone off their feet with his immaculate wardrobe choices. 'Photoshopped' he is, hotness he is more... love his facial hair and tussled hair anyday!

Ryan made Salvatore Ferragamo and Gucci shoot up on fashion appeal at movie premieres and red carpet events. He simply outshines all his actor peers, outdoing them in colour department (his choice for pale blue and green suiting made him a stand out!) and suave looks. Thank you Ryan for being so easy on the eyes and being a style inspiration for 2011~

Do you agree with my choice? Who will be your pick?

More pics of Ryan's hotness on my facebook fanpage. 'LIKE' my fanpage if you enjoy reading this post.

Kris Van Assche: 10 Rules of Style

Kris Van Assche assumed a difficult role when he was appointed the creative director of Dior Homme right after Hedi Slimane's departure. Hedi Slimane left a lasting legacy of redefined menswear proportions that has only recently seen it fading away. Kris's Dior Homme was wrought with many criticism and comments, some harsh, some good. Nonetheless, he has slowly injected his own design idealism into Dior Homme. Although I have not taken into his designs at Dior yet, I adore his work at his own label. Some of the best shoe designs come from this man. Here's an article from Details magazine which the very 'eye pleasing' designer shared his 10 rules of style. An insightful read:

Belgian born designer Kris Van Assche has become a more recognizable figure in the fashion world. Starting of as a designer for Yves Saint Laurent, he now runs his own label and is currently the artistic director for Dior Homme, which he has headed since 2007. Kris Van Assche was recently featured in Details magazine where he shared his top 10 rules of style giving us more insight into his fashion choices.

1.
A lot of fashion houses design for the catwalk and not the street—then you see the clothes on a regular guy and it’s a mess. Don’t disguise your personality behind labels; impose it on the clothes.

2.
The most embarrassing thing a man can own is a disposable razor. They’re for women. And speaking of grooming, there’s nothing less flattering than shaved legs.

3.
Wearing a pair of high-tops with a suit deconstructs the look, and that’s important. I like the way high-tops and pants act together. It’s like the effect of rolled-up sleeves for your trousers. Just make sure the socks match your sneakers, not the pants. If you like black high-tops, wear black socks. White, white.

4.
I don’t really think I know a man who wouldn’t look good in black. Black is always good. It’s the basic.

5.
You can wear a white shirt to work, to dinner, to visit the grandmother, to the opera, on vacation, at the beach. It’s the true get-away-with-anything item.

6.
There’s definitely an age limit for wearing leather pants, but not for wearing leather jackets. A standout fashion leather jacket can look great on a young guy. And there are a lot of suedes that men can get away with at any age.

7.
Don’t just copy an outfit. Look in the mirror and do a reality check. It’s all about making the good match. You’ll know when something is right. And if you don’t, just walk down the street: If people look away from you, then you know you’ve done something wrong.

8.
When I took over Dior Homme, I was warned. I knew it was going to be tough—but it was worse. In life you need good friends, and at work you need a good team. There’s so much drama in life and work that you can easily get lost. You need to keep a little distance from everything.

9.
We’ve had beefy guys and we’ve had—well, skinny isn’t really the right word, it’s more like scary. Now men should be athletic, healthy. Today it’s about having a balance in life—having nice clothes, good food, and respecting your body.

10.
My grandmother told me there are two ways of living: You can either survive or you can really make a life. There is eating and there is dining. She would always give that extra little effort, and I still believe that is important—to make things more beautiful makes all the difference.

Most memorable of his 10 rules is rule No. 2. I couldn't agree more. Men should trim and avoid shaving their legs. It is 'disturbing' to see a guy with silky smooth legs :-P

Below: A quality read that's hard to come by... The Rake magazine...

Below: The latest issue with Alessandro Sartori of Z Zegna...

Below: The previous issue featuring Tom Ford...

The Modern Voice Of Classic Men's Elegance: The Rake Magazine

These days, when you visit a bookstore's magazine section, you are spoilt for choice with so many men's fashion magazines. From the fashion forward, the conversative, the sexist types, you name it you got it. However, to find a quality read that educates you in the refinement of a man's true style, while providing interesting feature articles from knowledgeable writers, now that is a different story. Fortunately, I found 'The Rake' magazine. Ever since I bought my first issue featuring Tom Ford (yes, Mr Ford is a huge draw for me) on the cover, I have been hooked. From the paper used on the cover, to the well designed layouts and beautiful photography, this is what a quality men's magazine should be. But of course, the contents speaks volumes. More than gossips, fleeting fashion trends... the rake thrives on sharing with men, the sensibility and lifestyle of a true modern dandy. I love it. It's not for the trend conscious, it's for the trend savvy, for men not boys of this new millennium.

Click on website of the magazine, www.therakeonline.com ,and have a feel of what the magazine is all about. From articles such as the perfect blazer, to an interview with Pierre Alexis Dumas, artistic director of Hermès, this magazine lets you in on the insights that modern dandys will want to know.

Below: Hermès Fan must read this, an interview with Pierre Alexis Dumas, artistic director of Hermès (Full article available on www.therakeonline.com)

For the latest issue featuring Z Zegna's creative director Alessandro Sartori, learn about the brand Berluti thru the eyes of Olga Berluti, and get up close and personal with the likes of Christopher Isherwood and Kean Etro.

But what comes as the most surprise... this refined read hails from the sunny shores of Singapore. I feel proudly inspired already. The magazine costs SGD $10 in Singapore and is available for worldwide subscription.

Here's an interview by www.acontinuouslean.com with the magazine editor on the concept and inspiration of the magazine:

(Article dated May 2009)
These days, the sad reality is that print magazines are dropping like flies. I for one appreciate the tactile sense of seeing words and photos beautifully laid out on printed paper. I also appreciate the irony of me saying that through my blog via your computer monitor. The good news is, while print is retracting it certainly is not dead. And with the recent launch of the men’s magazine The Rake, there is actually reason to be excited. I got an opportunity not long ago to pose a few questions to The Rake editor Mr. Christian Barker about what exactly makes The Rake tick.

ACL: If you didn’t know it, one would think The Rake was published out of London, or maybe even Tokyo. So it begs the question, why Singapore?

Christian Barker: It’s great you should say that, as our goal was really to create a truly international magazine – something with origins you couldn’t readily pinpoint. Aside from Singapore being an apt base, in that it’s something of a crossroads between East and West, the simple answer is that our publisher, Revolution Press, is based here. But we see our reader as being a global citizen, and while presently the magazine is only retailed in Hong Kong and Singapore, our aim has always been for The Rake to expand internationally within a short span of time; those plans are moving forward pretty rapidly.

ACL: When did The Rake launch?

CB: December last year.

ACL:Where does the name come from?

CB: The initial inspiration was Gianni Agnelli, who was known – among other things – as “The Rake of the Riviera.” Obviously, we’re huge fans of Agnelli’s sartorial approach, which we try to echo in our advocacy of individual style, knowing the rules and when to break them, and taking real pleasure in exploring classic menswear’s possibilities. Agnelli had nothing to prove, he didn’t “dress to impress” – he dressed beautifully because it’s a joy to do so. That’s an attitude we emulate. Plus, Agnelli’s a good example of the type of man we imagine The Rake’s reader is, or aspires to be: well-travelled, tasteful, experienced, virile, successful, cosmopolitan, confident; someone who appreciates and seeks out beauty, is a bon vivant, but is astute in the way he spends his money, always looking for real and lasting value, legitimacy, a return on the investment. So, Agnelli was the primary inspiration, but then a term like ‘The Rake’ also evokes the likes of Cary Grant or George Clooney, stylish guys who only improved with age; sophisticated, charming, clever, irreverent men. Rakish, really.

ACL: One thing I like about the magazine is the emphasis on make, on the process of crafting luxury goods. How did that come about? Is that something you all are inherently interested in?

CB: Definitely. I think most men are interested in that additional dimension – we like to look ‘under the hood’. Going behind the scenes is vital to explaining the quantitative and qualitative value of the things we feature. Why is this a superior product? What makes this company different to its competitors? How are the raw materials different? What’s the heritage, the history, the design aspect? What’re the craftsmen’s unique skills? How much time goes into making this thing? How long will it last? ‘Behind the scenes’ is actually a great analogy – where so much fashion is pure theatre, The Rake is all about pulling back the curtain.

ACL: There is a lot of service in the book, but done in a certain way as to feel very inclusive. Is it hard to combine the two things, luxury and service without seeming preachy?

CB: [I take it by service you mean the educational aspect?] Honestly, delving into the minutiae of artisanal craftsmanship has been a huge learning curve for us too, so it’s easy to steer clear of appearing holier-than-thou when we approach the instructional side of things. We have a lot of fun learning about this stuff, and hopefully, that exuberance comes through when we subsequently impart the knowledge we’ve picked up.

ACL: How is The Rake different than other men’s magazines out there?

CB: Men’s style is our main focus, but unlike the myriad ‘edgy’ men’s fashion mags – y’know, the sort filled with dimly-lit images of skinny 15-year-old boys sporting scanty, bizarrely styled outfits that, if worn on the street, would draw incredulous stares and peals of laughter – The Rake’s approach to menswear is very classic and wearable, while remaining creative, vibrant and adventurous. Our focus is style, not fashion; the timeless, not the trendy. The Rake is also a lot more instructional and detail-focused than the more general men’s style titles. For example, we won’t give you one page on how a suit should fit – we’ll run 16 pages on how your suit jacket should fit, with sections on what will flatter different body types. We’ll follow that up with equally comprehensive stories on the other elements of suiting. As for men’s luxury magazines, most will only tell you that something is “the best money can buy.” The Rake will tell you WHY it’s the best. We won’t talk about things in terms of their expense, we’ll talk about their VALUE. It’s an important distinction.

ACL: You sent me the past two issues (thank you), but how does one get the magazine if they live internationally, say in the United States?

CB: Our website, www.therakeonline.com, just went live – via the relevant link there, subscription is now available anywhere in the world.

ACL: Anything exciting coming up that ACL readers should know about?

CB: Our forthcoming fourth issue focuses on British elegance, and as you’d imagine this entails coverage of some amazing brands and individuals. Subsequent issues will look at the unique style of Italy and the US – no doubt the latter will contain plenty to pique the interest of ACL readers.

ACL: I haven’t been this excited about a new magazine since Monocle came out, but Monocle tends to snub New York. How does The Rake feel about the city that never sleeps?

CB: We heart NY. What’s not to love?

Below: Jason Brooks' very sexy illustrated album cover...no one draws it as good as him...

Hed Kandi Beach House 2009

I am a huge fan of beach themed grooves. And Hed Kandi's Beach House is the ultimate indispensible sundrenched summer listening. Soulful tunes that is inspired by chic beach mansions and hotels from St Tropez to Bali. These are music to lounge to from sunrise to sundown, best played at a comfortable volume from the pool area of your beach front retreat. Of course, always complimented by the gentle sounds of waves kissing at a nearby crescent shores. Needless to say, clad up in the trendiest togs from Prada to Balmain while you groove away for pure chic bliss!

My favourite track from this 2009 album has to be my favourite group, Afterlife's Fantasy. The kind of sultry dreamy piece that makes you feel sensual and want grind some bodies at the nearest dancefloor:-P

Quoting from the album cover "...the beach is your catwalk, the harbour is your dancefloor..." If you are fond of 'sand dunes and salty air', then this album is for you.

Excuse me, I am off to my imaginary Balearic beach vacation...

Nicolas Malleville + Coqui Coqui

Hot male model Nicolas Malleville is more than just a pretty face. Apparently, beyond flaunting his looks in ad campaigns the likes of Paul Smith, Tod's and Burberry, this handsome hunk from Argentina is also a smart business man, most notably for his mini hotel empire, Coqui Coqui in Mexico. Surprised eh?

Just five years in the making, his brainchild, Coqui Coqui located in the Yucatán Peninsula, includes three chic hotels and spas, as well as a perfumery, a café and a store. One of the resort, Coqui Coqui Tulum is a quiet oasis of tranquility and rustic beauty. Beautifully decorated with Mexican, Asian and European influences, the eco friendly resort is unpretentious and nonchalant. Resembling a private home more than a hotel:-) It’s also the kind of place that feels a million miles away from civilization.

With an interest in plants and nature, Nicolas dabbles in his own perfumery creating unique scents that bedazzle the senses and a spa to match. He also has a shop selling scarves, baskets, ropes, hats and housewares as well as a cafe where he decked out with 500-year-old tiles.

His style is impeccable, his charm is natural. From the way he dresses (a wrinkled shirt, leather strap sandals from the local area and his sexy facial hair) to his savvy business sense, he is truly an inspiration. Nicolas is prove that you can have in all, looks and a career while enjoying life as you move along.

Enjoy the pictures, the beautiful interiors has already tantalised the travel appetite in me:-)

An Ode To Stefano Pilati

A gifted man, a man who embodies style and class, embraces a certain nonchalant flair in mixing softness in man's dressing. An inspiration for all men who aspires to dress well, including me.

Found an article about Stefano, did not know he switched sexual preferences after playing many years in the heterosexual team:-P. Interesting to know a bit more background history of this handsome YSL crearive director whose work is breath-taking.

Lastly, I love the way he talks (Check out the youtube video below). He's humble and intellectual:-P I am impressed.

Stefano Pilati's Drug of Choice is Not Tom Ford
Fri, 08/29/08

Stefano Pilati is certain about one thing — he doesn't think his predecessor at Yves Saint Laurent, Tom Ford, is gifted — and he wasn't alone. When he went to work for Ford at YSL, "I was being tested by everybody at YSL . . . Even the receptionist. They all hated Tom, and they were all telling me about Mr. Saint Laurent and what he used to do."

But as for how Stefano thinks of himself — that's where things get a little less black-and-white. In this Sunday's New York Times Magazine, the designer tells Lynn Hirschberg he had interlocking male and female symbols tattooed on his arm at 13 — as an act of defiance. The now out designer lived for many years as a heterosexual, surprising women with his switch. "He always had girlfriends, and I thought Stefano was open to anything, but that may have been wishful thinking on my part," one said. He's even been known to try on his women's collection to check the garment. Once, Valerie Hermann, CEO of YSL, walked in on him in a petticoat: "I said, ‘Stefano, take that off!"

Perhaps the most personally debilitating blurring of lines Stefano committed was that of interchanging drugs with work — until he went through rehab twice because his creativity was affected, he worked on heroin: "It was integrated in my everyday life: in the morning, you take the drug, and then you go to work, and then again in the afternoon and evening. You can easily switch from the obsession of the drug to the obsession of the work."

He may play back and forth with gender, sexuality, work . . . but amongst all the confusion, one thing is for sure: Stefano Pilati is gifted.

Stefano Pilati Doesn’t Like Male Models or
Red-Carpet Stylists

09/02/08

Stefano Pilati Photo: Getty Images

Last week we brought you a glimpse of the forthcoming New York Times Magazine profile of Yves Saint Laurent head designer Stefano Pilati, in which he asserts that Tom Ford — from whom he took over YSL when Ford stepped down in 2004 — is "talented but not gifted," and more interested in designing safe clothes than taking risks in his collections. Pilati has been taking risks at YSL, and though they didn't pay off in his critically panned first collections for the house, to call his fall '08 collection a success would be a gross understatement. Critics haven't stopped raving over it since it walked in February. The full Pilati interview ran this weekend, and he had a lot more to say to Lynn Hirschberg about designing, his time in rehab, and why he doesn't like male models. But let's start with a little more dirt on Tom Ford.

Ford "seduced" Pilati to leave Prada for YSL, where everyone
hated Tom.

“Tom is a seducer … When I met him, I was under his spell. But I was amazingly scared to move to Paris and work for YSL. Prada was like a family, and it was a very female environment. Tom was surrounded by men, and he was like a fashion designer in a movie. We were naïve at Prada — we did things because we liked them, and they took off. Tom was much more calculated. I spent the first year trying to absorb his mentality. It was very difficult. Tom was mostly living in London, and I was being tested by everybody at YSL in Paris. Even the receptionist. They all hated Tom, and they were all telling me about Mr. Saint Laurent and what he used to do.”

There is a reason Pilati's Muse Two YSL bag looked nothing like his Muse One YSL bag.

“I do not get this naming of bags. Customers seem to like to ask for bags by name, but I don’t really like to name my bags — they are not children or pets.”

He doesn't feel the need to make red-carpet clothes because stylists ruin them.

“[T]he Oscars and all those events were ruined by the stylists. Mr. Saint Laurent would never have tolerated the stylists having this much power. Unfortunately, it does affect sales. If an actress wears your dress, customers will call the day after to get that dress. That one dress may give popularity to the brand, but is it popularity you look for? I’m not sure. I think I’d rather have loyalty.”

He doesn't like seeing male models on the runway.

“A well-dressed man is someone you want to share an evening with, have a conversation … You don’t want to see him on the catwalk. Whatever your sexuality, fashion is female … How beautiful is it to see the breast or the derrière moving on the street? We are all seduced by the blue of the sky and the red of the flower, why not the behind of a woman? It’s just a beautiful part of nature.”

He once sent one of his staffers to buy a pair of sandals off a man's feet on the streets of Paris.

“The guy wanted 500 euros. But we got them for 100. The sandals are from a tribe of Bedouins, and they are genius. Maybe they’ll inspire me, maybe not. One day, they might fit into a Moroccan moment. You can find greatness everywhere. You just have to look.”

He's been a fashionisto since he was 9 years old.

“I never had sneakers. My mother was pushing me to dress up, but from the ages of 8 or 9, I picked out my own clothes. I would change my clothes up to five times a day. To play, I had clogs. I had loafers to go to school. Lace-up shoes to go to Mass. This kind of discipline taught me a lot. To the point where I could then be more transgressive. I tried very early to break rules. I wanted to wear clothes from Fiorucci, that was the dream. My mother didn’t want that.”

His second rehab stint was at a facility for Vietnam vets.

“Can you believe it? I lived for one year with a T-shirt, a pair of jeans and nothing else. That was a shock from where I was coming from … In the end it was a privilege to spend a year on myself. I went to rehab because the drugs were starting to affect my creativity. I was in love with someone, and I thought it would be forever. But it wasn’t. Now, I never look back. I’m much more intrigued by lucidity than I was by my alteration.”

Being gay allows him to look at women objectively.

“I always wonder why 99 percent of the top male fashion designers are homosexual. In my case, I would say that my sexuality has led me to love women to death and to hate them as well … [Being gay] helped me understand the male mind. But when I do a fitting with a woman, I think, Would this woman seduce me?”

Naomi Campbell, the star of the fall YSL campaign, is like two people in one!

“Naomi represents the new world — in my mind, she is a mix of Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton.”
