My MANy Bags Trendspotting #73

Below: Any guys for 'peep toe' shoe designs for Spring Summer 2010?
(Lad Musician Spring Summer 2010 Mens Collection. I love those shoes!
Especially the black ones.)

Below: Phillip Lim did his take on peep toe shoes as well for his new SS2010 collection which I adore just as much!

Below: Peep toe shoes originates from the women's collections... which goes to show the cross gender influences men and women's designs share these days...
(Balenciaga Women's Cruise 2010... look at the similarity of the women's and men's version of this shoe trend...)

Peeping 'Toms'...Nope..It's Toes!

Men and women's fashion have always shared a cross gender influence on each other. More so on the women's side than men's.

Over the past 2 years, I have noticed men's shoe designs getting more avant garde and bold, with influences from women's peep toe shoes infiltrating into men's arena. I first noticed this trend sharing with the Balenciaga men's take on the ladies' Open Toe Hiking Boots/Gladiator heels for Spring Summer 2008.

Below: Balenciaga first brought my attention to peep toe (open toe) shoes in Spring Summer 2008. It was a male interpretation of the Fall Winter 2007 Women's hiking/gladiator heels/boots as shown below... These shoes are so rare, it never made it to Singapore or many parts of the world. If they do appear, they flew off the racks as soon as they get stocked...

That same season, Prada did her 'peep toe' trainers which did not seem to do very well (evident with markdowns starting at 60% off here in SG during sales that season and still with plenty of sizes left), perhaps too radical for men at that point in time.

Below: I got these Prada Open Toe trainers which at the beginning found it hard to mix and match. But now I love these and find them really versatile and unique. I get compliments every time I wear them. I guess all it takes is to get use to a new style and that takes time...

Pierre Hardy did his take on the peep toe shoes in a hybrid design of sandals and chukka boots which faired better and now a recurring design in his collection to this day.

Below: Pierre Hardy is also one of the more experimental shoe designers to offer peep toe styles for men, as evident in this pair of hybrid sandals and chukka boots. Notice the similarity to Balenciaga's Cruise 2010 Women's shoes shown above...)

Japanese designers embraced this shoe trend and we see 0044 and Giuliano Fujiwara partaking in open toes for SS2008 as well. These brands were perhaps the forerunners that help perpetuate the idea of peep toe shoes for guys.

Below: If anyone were to embrace a new trend first, they have to be the Japanese! 0044 and Giuliano Fujiwara's take on open toe shoe designs in Spring Summer 2008...

Below: Giuliano Fujiwara Spring Summer 2008 collection with those killer shoes!

As the seasons come and go, more and more designers evolved and followed. So till this season, we still see these open toe shoes going strong on the men's runway. Phillip Lim, Lad Musician, Julius did their fair share of peep toe shoe offerings for Spring Summer 2010. I am a huge fan of this version of shoe. Their versatility as both sandal and shoe makes them highly wearable while making a bold and strong statement. Will this trend continue? Will you wear such designs which supposedly originates from the ladies?

Lad Musician Fall Winter 2009 Blazers, Vests and Shirts

Here's another of my want from Lad Musician...I cannot help but be excited by the collection. The severe diagonal cut of the blazer, vest and shirt is a simple concept...but executed immaculately and in a fresh way. The layering of the different lengths of the pieces in varying degrees of black (most appropriate as the collection was themed 'Black Painting' and features 5 variants of the colour) creates a very conceptual and elegant look. I love the subtlety of the concept and yet it stands out from the conventional cuts of these pieces.

Now where can I get Lad Musician?!??!?....I need those slim fitted blazers bad! They are all sold out online at Lad Musician's online shop...says a lot of the popularity of the pieces. Even that tambourine pendant necklace is a must have!

What do you guys think?

Update: Tang+Co stocks limited selections of Lad Musician. Going at 20% discount for the spring summer 2009 stocks!

the clothes are as amazing as the design of the bag:-)

Lad Musician Canvas Holdalls

Remember the chambray fabric flower brooch I recently got from Lad Musician? The wonderful online retailer, Blackbird was the first to bring this very interesting and exclusive Japanese brand to my attention. As they are sold in only a handful of places outside of Japan, finding the brand online (I am only aware of Blackbird stocking this brand) poses a real challenge. But good news, it seems Lad Musician has set up an online shop for their collection and now you can get selected pieces straight from the brand's website. However, the bad news is I cannot decipher the terms and conditions of the online shop as they are in Japanese. So I cannot advise on whether if they do international orders. Nonetheless, at least now you can get a good glimpse of their pieces up close and personal. Start admiring the creative designs behind the designers there. (For fall 2009 season, the collection was based on the theme of 'Black Painting'. The collection showcases alomst 5 different kinds of black. The distinct design feature is the severe diagonal cuts for their ready-to-wear. Very interesting, I am desperate to get my hands on the blazer and vest.)

One of the pieces that got my attention is this Lad Musician Canvas Holdall. I like its' simplicity. It's so simple that you really have to rely on an interesting design to create lust for the bag. But Lad Musician has achieved that... the bag has a very unique and interesting 'curve' on the duffel style design. Made entirely of canvas in 3 different colours, the quiet allure of the bag is not in overwhelming luxurious materials or brand recognition, but the innovative idea. The way it slings onto a person's back simply looks fabulous. The plus point of buying a cult label like this...is the chances of someone sporting the same thing is very minimal. A thought which I really like:-P

Let's hope the brand will make it's availability more accessible to fashion fans outside of Japan soon.

My Lad Musician Brooch Purchase Got Mentioned On Blackbird...

Thanks guys! It seems the kind guys/ladies at Blackbird's blog picked up on my recent post about my purchase of the Lad Musician Flower Brooch:-P

Cool! Fellow shopping fans, do check out their online store here for many interesting brands (eg. Robert Geller, Rag and Bone, Opening Ceremony, Juilus). And they even have a blog to give news and info about their merchandise and store happenings:-)

What a cool store. We should have more shops like these in Singapore.

Lad Musician Large Navy Chambray Flower Brooch
(Reveal from 'Parcel Monday Part One...')

I blog about this wonderful Lad Musician Large Navy Chambray Flower Brooch a while ago. I like it so much I had to find ways to buy it without paying a full US$50 for shipping. So I wrote to Blackbird to make an enquiry if they can reduce the mailing costs since this item is lightweight and small. It is just not right to pay US$50 for mailing that to Singapore.

A very helpful Lear answered my email and immediately offered to lower the shipping costs to US$30. She even took the initiative to hold the item for me and send me an online invoice. Such good anticipation and service:-) Of course I took up the offer and she mailed the lovely brooch to me last Tuesday. It took a while to arrive, since this came all the way from Seattle! The wait was well worth it. The parcel arrived super well packed with lots of stuffing and cushioning. Thanks to Lear for taking the effort to packed it so well. The plastic box suffered no dents or scruffs. Amazing.

I really adore the brooch. Shaped like a chrysanthemum, so it is more unique than the regular roses. The material and colour also makes it very suitable for guys. Wear it on a blazer or a tee, I am sure this is one accessory to add 'dramatic effect' to an outfit:-P

Retail price: US $140. Where to buy: Blackbird, Seattle
