Writers And Painters: Burberry Prorsum Spring Summer 2014 Menswear

Burberry Prorsum returns to homeground with their Spring Summer 2014 menswear collection, as one of the line-ups for London Collections: Mens. Quintessentially English, Burberry’s showing in London never felt so right.

‘Writers and Painters’ was the theme for Spring Summer 2014, as Christopher Bailey celebrates artistic and intellectual spirit, with a nod and a wink to Alan Bennett and David Hockney. Expect easy, relaxed tailoring that sits alongside lightweight pieces in linen and slouchy cashmere, all accented by bright pops of colours inspired from David Hockney’s paintings. Weatherproof cagoules and sou’westers take the whole collection outdoors and exudes the British summer. This is a collection that many guys will rejoice for its wearability, nothing too far fetched like Spring Summer 2013’s metallic frenzy. Memorable styling comes from the cute little overdyed nappa leather pouches that visually excites and while making a good alternative to all clutch bag lovers. I especially love the striped panelled or polka dot ones in suede and leather which will make a fun bag to carry come 2014. One downside to the collection, everything seemed very familiar. Polka dots, stripes and colours are simply too easy references for an established designer like Christopher Bailey. I wished there were more original details or prints that would have added depth and exclusivity for Burberry Prorsum, considering the line is Burberry’s trend forward collection. Burberry Prorsum Fall Winter 2013 Menswear

Burberry Prorsum’s latest Fall Winter 2013 menswear shown in Milan just yesterday was all about seeing classics with a new eye. Evolving the brand’s outerwear and updating them with new colours, materials and shapes, while injecting playful elements, was the intention of creative director Christopher Bailey. Befittingly, the collection was called I Heart Classics, as explained by the designer.

There are cheeky hearts, resembling text message symbols (Burberry has always propagate the technology driven modern age), translucent rubber topcoats in burgundy, grape and caramel... but most memorable of all, abundant animal prints that will trek the Burberry man into the jungle (or urban jungle) by next winter.

Look forward to accents or full on splashes of animal prints on collars, shoes, Boston bags, totes and leather satchel bags that deserves some 'wild' attention.

So what are your thoughts on this latest Burberry Prorsum menswear offering? Too kitsch? Too boring? Or you simply love it for the fun but highly wearable aspect of the collection. For me, it is undeniably a safe collection, nothing overtly surprising but all mixed and combined together with the savvy eyes of a seasoned designer.

On a last note, you can pre-order the bags and outerwear and wear them way ahead of everyone at www.burberry.com till 20 January. I am thinking about the small leather satchel with contrasting Burberry checks and leopard printed pocket (USD1195 or SGD1995). Should I?

No Rain But Shine: Burberry Prorsum Spring Summer 2013 Menswear

Yesterday, Christopher Bailey showed a bold Spring Summer 2013 mens collection for Burberry Prorsum. 'Come rain or shine' was on the show notes... but it was not rain that was brought in.... but high octane 'SHINE' in the form of blinding metallic colours, surprising the audience and wowing the media.

Taking the brand forward yet again... where future meets traditional. The mix of classic menswear pieces of tweeds, wool and garbadine accented with visionary use of metallic colours and materials spices up the conservative pieces... letting any guy display his forward sense of style without compromising his time-tested looks.

Bomber jackets, slim trousers, trenches, cardigans and sweaters come in all shades of metallic hues and cleverly woven with a strong Burberry flavour, eclectic and fun. I especially love the metallic half lapels on coats. Watch out too for the accessories, metallic croc iPad cases, tote bags and birkenstock lookalike sandals (with socks!). All those 'shimmery' pieces seem to be gearing up to outshine any competitors and ceorce your consumer dollars. No wonder most of the looks are paired with sunglasses... It's truly a mesmersing Burberry season yet again.

Balmain Homme Fall Winter 2012 Menswear

Under Olivier Rousteing's creative direction, Balmain Homme takes a turn for the more refined. Wear and tear is fading from the brand's DNA and in place is a new Balmain man whose sense of style exudes an air of modern sophistication with a touch of rebel attitude.

Spring Summer 2012 was about ranch boys but for the new Fall Winter 2012, it seems the Balmain collection is made for the young aristocrats and Russian military officers. Most noteworthy are the Napoleon style soldier jackets and waistcoats paired with a pair of the brand's signature ribbed panel biker jeans and boots. Lots of velvets add to the regal feel. Short cropped collarless jackets makes another statement and quilted biker jackets are a must have!

This is not a rocket science collection of innovation. But a highly desirable collection based on panache of french style, well put together but not trying too hard. I see myself in everything!

Parisian Menswear, AMI Fall Winter 2011 Collection

Top fashion brands the likes of Jil Sander, Prada and Louis Vuitton may be highlights of any fashion week... but sometimes guys just want accessible fashion, devoid of overtly abstract concepts, out of this world constructions and over the top styling.

Parisian menswear brand, AMI is just this little fashion savior the fashion gods have sent to guys all over the world to address this calling. We have always been enthralled by Parisian mens' ensemble, their panache, but not too much effort styles have inspired many. Designer Alexandre Mattiussi (who worked at Dior Homme's 30 Avenue Montaigne line, at Marc Jacobs, and at Givenchy before starting his own label), managed to capture this attitude of french dressing and stand out amongst a sea of fashion giants. Now in its 3rd season, AMI is getting approval from style savvy guys all around the world. His fast growing stockists is proof of this. From top fashion retailers like Barneys, Mr Porter, Le Bon Marché, 10 Corso Como, to The Webster... the list is expanding.

For Fall Winter 2011, Alexandre Mattiussi is inspired by the idea of a weekend getaway after a week of hard toiling at the office. "The idea at the beginning was a Friday night, after a really hard week," Mattiussi said. "You take the Range Rover, you put the Labrador in the back of the car, you keep your shoes, you keep your trousers, you're going to spend three days in Normandy at your parents' home with the guys."

Think gun-club checks and waterproofed plaid barn jackets, denim jeans, smart blazers and all the timeless pieces of mens clothing you and your friends would find and appropriate from dad's closets. The philosophy of the collection was reality—not fancy fashion.

Below: Floral pants with a cosy knit... very apt for the designer's inspiration of a weekend getaway out of the city:-) I would wear this look!

I especially adored the styling and colour palette. Pale pink trousers, bright burnt orange coats and floral print trousers made a lot of sense. Especially now when menswear trends are going back to fundamentals since the past 2 seasons.

I will be sure to pay lots of attention to AMI from now on. Thanks to Mr Porter, AMI menswear is now accessible for purchase by everyone. The problem is deciding which pieces should you add to your online shopping cart:-)

Burberry Prorsum Fall Winter 2012 Menswear

I will leave it to the professionals to critic and review the collection. Here on this post, I am just going to do what fan boys do... drool and covet over which pieces I like and will buy from Burberry Prorsum's Fall Winter 2012 Menswear collection as unveiled yesterday in Milan.

Christopher Bailey has been on a roll creating some of my favourite collections at Burberry Prorsum for 2 consecutive seasons. Spring Summer 2012's quirky artisan inspired cork sole shoes and colourful ready to wear scored a thumbs up... and now for this new Fall Winter 2012 menswear collection, I am again swooned.

Combining traditional English styles (think Sherlock Holmes and leading men of TV series Downtown Abbey) with an outdoorsy adventure spirit of dapper gentlemen and all their hunting gear, the collection balances refinement and utilitarian spirit in mens dressing. Nothing stuffy or boring, with just enough quirks to excite. Fox beaded appliqués on sweaters and shirts, animal heads (greyhounds and ducks) on brollies and studs on gloves/document cases add the right amount of interest against the sartorial smarts of the collection. Hunting and field jackets, tweed trenches and jaunty polka dot prints are also highlights. I especially love the proportion of short coats over suits which is young and refreshing.

So what will I buy if money was not a problem... here's my picks from the collection:

1) Fox Graphic Print Shirt - I love the quirky animal print!
2) Duck head brollies - It's the new accessory and totally applicable for year end rainy Singapore weather...
3) Suede Patchwork Document Case - Preorder now at Burberry.com for SGD2390. (Kinda Céline-ish but still very desirable)
4) Studded Leather Document Case - I love studs! (but the price is astronomical at SGD8295!)

Mulberry Spring Summer 2012 Womens Collection

Mulberry is hitting the beach for Spring Summer 2012! With an invite in the form of an inflated buoy... you can be sure it's another upbeat and girly-fun collection at the house of Mulberry. Once again, creative director, Emma Hill has been inspired by British themes... this time by the Great British summer and seaside shenanigans; donkey rides, ice-cream on the beach, sparkling pier lights and kiss-me-quick chic. It's referencing back to the quirky English habit of enduring the beach no matter the weather, raincoats and all.

Literally, in a visual way, this is one collection that look delicious enough to be eaten. Eye candy hues inspired by the seaside of Nettle, Fern, Grass, Wheatfield and Ochre sit side by side with 'mouth-watering' Fudge, Marshmallow White, Candy Pink and Lemon Sherbet. I feel like I am devouring an entire selection of flavours from an ice cream parlour just by looking at the collection. These brilliant colours translates from ready to wear pieces to coveted Mulberry bag favourites such as the Bayswater Satchel, Alexa and Lily bags. Watch out for super-cute Teddy Collection featuring teddy rivets and twist-locks adorn Alexa and Lily styles which I am sure you’ll want to add to your closet next season.

Balmain Homme Spring Summer 2011

Rather than analysing why Olivier Rousteing's 1st Balmain Homme collection (Spring Summer 2012) played so safe to what Christophe Decarnin has done... I will comment on pieces which I like and some which I feel have evolved, no matter how marginally.

The use of snakeskin is one new material that Olivier Rousteing has injected to his first reign over Balmain Homme. I love that Biker Vest in matte Python which is quite an unusual material for this men's design. Other visible deviation from the 'Decarnin' flavour includes the reinforcing of Balmain's severe skinny tailoring for their sartorial pieces. Tuxedo jackets reworked to become vests, cropped shorter or paired with drop crotch matching pants over boots, send off a totally different rock chic sensibility. Balmain boys no longer need to keep to the usual super tight silhouettes. Think a cross between Rick Owens and Dior Homme.

In keeping with Balmain's unending pursuit of ultimate luxury, Olivier Rousteing presents a beautiful crocodile leather tuxedo jacket that leaves the common man only to admire from a far distance. The presumably exorbitantly priced tuxedo leather jacket may only find Kanye West as its owner since he may be the only fan who can afford this. All in all, this collection casts away some of that 'uncouth' Balmain look (highly frayed and destroyed pieces which we both love and hate) and reinvigorates with a more polished and sophisticated aesthetics.

As for my favourite pieces... I think I am going to snap up more of their TDF biker jeans, this time in lemon sorbet yellow or salmon pink. The jeans get more skinny this time too, which I find very welcoming:-)

Burberry Prorsum Spring Summer 2012 Menswear

Throw in a mix of English eccentricities, craftsmanship and ethnic inspirations... and there you go... Burberry Prorsum's Spring Summer 2012 menswear. Upbeat, wearable, intricately crafted but with enough quirk (check out those dorky knitted caps!) to warrant our consumer dollars. Chrisopher Bailey has done another outstanding job balancing practicality and runway appeal.

“This collection started with our iconic heritage as the foundation, we really wanted to emphasise this feeling of handcrafted pieces, celebrating craftsmanship but always with this playful element. We have taken our icons and played with texture to personalise and give them a real character and charm using colour to highlight the intricate detail that goes into crafting them.’’

Focus is on outerwear once again. But this time, they are more summer-friendly, with plenty of parka jackets that will not seem like an overkill in summer heat. Silhouettes are given a wide over narrow proportions, with the skinniest of pants often matched with oversized jackets. While the delectable brightly hued pieces definitely garnered a lot of applause, I feel it is the footwear who stole the limelight for this collection.

Those new S2012 footwear is love at first sight! I love them so much that I am going to start a 'shoe fund' for next Spring Summer 2012 dedicated to Burberry Prorsum shoes (I know they will probably cost an arm and leg, so it is good to start saving early). Those thick soles in cock material and navajo fabrics/woven leather mixes are eccentric and fun, making them a must have for any shoe fan. One minor complaint though... the 'wedge sole' look seems inspired from Prada's infamous SS2011 Espadrilles Brogues. And for that matter, the entire ready-to-wear collection reeks of a Miuccia flavour (Think past Prada and Miu Miu collections... Especially Spring Summer 2005). Brand them Prada and they would still feel most at home. Mutual designer inspirations? I guess... which is not necessary a bad thing. What do you guys think?

Balmain Fall Winter 2011 Womenswear

Christophe Decarnin may be absent from his recent Balmain Fall Winter 2011 show, nonetheless he seemed to have literally 'clean up' his act! Presented on the runway are levels up from SS2011's atrocious safety pinned and tattered rags, and Balmain glamour is back at its glory. Albeit, pared down and more tastefully sexy... perhaps Balmain's take on the minimalist frenzy going on in fashion now.

The new sensibility can be attributed to new styling consultant Melanie Ward (Best known for her work with Helmut Lang, king of minimalist... and perhaps the change for a more subtle display of glamour this season for Balmain?) who takes over from Emmanuelle Alt. She brings with her a new direction for the brand. From the collarless, slightly oversized metallic blazers, looser pants and dresses... the silhouettes are less severe and more focused. Of course, everything is given a couture boost with intricate crystal embellishments that will sky rocket the prices to astronomical levels.

One thing's for sure, a lot of fans want Balmain to succeed, anxiously waiting for the moment when Christophe Decarnin stops his repeat vision of biker chic and dwells into a new territory for the 'sexy' French brand. This season, Balmain achieves that and I am so happy:-) Easy comprehensible glamour that everyone understands and want. I can literally see those metallic jeans/blazers fly off the store racks for next season!

Mulberry Fall Winter 2011 Womenswear And Runway Video

Emma Hill is known to draw references for her Mulberry collections from the most whimiscal of inspirations. From Valley of the Dolls (Fall Winter 2010), to Garden blossoms of Spring Summer 2011 and now Roald Dahl’s Fantastic Mr. Fox for her latest Fall Winter 2011 Collection.

The English countryside takes centrestage, as does its mysterious inhabitants, where the runway show was held in a hedgerow and hillock-daubed Ballroom at Claridge’s Hotel yesterday (20th February 2011). Hedgerow animals such as foxes, hedgehogs and squirrels; trees filled with birds; a wooden catwalk, benches and a garden shed; and plenty of toadstools of all shapes and sizes form a fantasy-like setting that transports the audience to the mood of the collection.

The ready to wear pieces are fabulous and may be commercial in some aspects, but they were never the heroes of any Mulberry collection. The bags are the true 'scene stealers' of the runway. And this season, we see a welcoming change, as in a more controlled colour palette and patterns for the collection. Less brash and more sophisticated, these new arm candies, the likes of highly popular Alexa bags and its sister, Tillie, appeared in camel, moss green, bright turquoise (my favourite!) and gold during the catwalk. Which ones to pick? The choices are aplenty! One thing’s for sure, once I get more information, I will definitely share it here to all Mulberry fans.

But for now, I love the turquoise coloured bags... Especially the new rising star of Mulberry, Tillie (Those trompe l’oeil metal buckles are now seen on belts and jackets!) How fresh for dull winters!

Below: Another same old, same old... Balmain Fall Winter 2011 Mens collection... just that this time it's styled into a nomad, highlands mountaineering theme... The Balmain man has shed the urban biker styles and hop onto a field trip to the Himalayas?

Balmain Homme Fall Winter 2011 Menswear

Everyone who have followed my blog knows I am a fan of Balmain. I have been supporting the brand since its rise to fame with their womenswear in 2008. When menswear came in Fall 2009, I jumped at the first chance to buy into the Balmain Homme collection. Biker chic, rock star allure and military luxe were major influences for Balmain, and with right timing aligning with the world fashion trends...Christophe Decarnin's collections (both men and womens') got everyone talking and wanting Balmain. Of course, the ridiculous pricing helps to create media buzz and made every fashionista/o willing to go on baked beans just to afford the brand.

4 seasons into Balmain Homme, I must say I feel like eating stale baked beans that's sitting on the table 24 months long (6mths per season, 4 seasons now...you do the math). And it's not a very good plate of beans to swallow.

Although this Fall Winter 2011 season does look better than the current SS2011 collection, very much every item is recurred. From Denim shirts, biker pants, plaid shirts to peaked shoulder blazers to tall boots... reworked a little here and there and they are represented as a new collection. Imagination thumbs down, wearability thumbs up, classics pieces always fit and never go out of style. So I have come into conclusion for my new Balmain shopping formula now... let's all buy Balmain during sale seasons. And it's those further marked down seasons like 70% off that I am talking about. Isn't it a fantastic feeling we get the 'new season' styles but we just pay deservingly less! Smart strategy? Anyone wants to join me?:-)

Of course, I am being very harsh with my critic this time. But pardon me, I still covet some of the pieces, especially with this Fall winter 2011's nomad/mountaineer theme. However, more so now, I imagined creating the looks from my own closet's inventory and not those pieces from the new collection.

Balmain is all about styling rather than conceptual fashion. It's a feeling that you get from the lookbooks that exudes those yearning for the pieces. Balmain excels in creating these 'effortless, highly attainable' styling, served with a hefty does of French nonchalance and attitude, that all men can aspire towards . I lost count the number of times I have been sold into the collections just by browsing the lookbooks.

I think this is Balmain's winning triumph card and why they continue to pursue this design direction and strategy. Easy fashion that most guys can adopt into their wardobes while siphoning luxury prices off them... a winning formula that will make Balmain owners chuckling to the bank. Afterall, profitability and fashion co-exists on a fine balance, and it ain't necessarily a bad thing to go for mass appeal when you can get the big bucks:-)

D&G Fall Winter 2011 Menswear

D&G looks to the 'Coca Cola' drinking and 'Mickey Mouse' cartoon watching generation for inspiration this coming Fall Winter 2011. American youth culture has invaded the Italian fashion house and it's a riot of candy coloured energy bursting on the runway. I love it!

Upbeat and highly wearable, I almost see myself in every look. Especially love the kitsch but nostalgia-inducing 'Coca Cola' slogan pullovers, or those Mickey Mouse decorated nylon down jackets in blinding hues! These iconography will resonate so well and elicit a smile to those who live through this era. The fitted silhouettes, teamed with a new D&G proposal of drop crotch but skin tight leg (or simply Skinny Carrot Pants) trousers in candy jar colours are very welcoming. What a breath of fresh air from the sombre tones we have always been presented with during winter seasons.

With a collection this fun, I know I will be 'endorsing' myself to D&G for next Fall Winter, just as the brand has itself to Coca Cola and Mickey!
